Un día en el monte is my Master’s Degree Project and it was proposed as a tool to reconnect with the territory through a design methodology to build and activate devices to interact with the medium in which they are placed. These artefacts helped construct a situated practice and knowledge that arose from the minor learnings attained as the project moved forward and along the different perspectives and ways of working with the territory and the landscape. Therefore, the role of the architect is reconsidered as a mediator between the various human and non-human agencies and other design approaches are investigated in order to articulate new interaction networks in connection with the complex systems of future coexistence.
The project takes place at the surrounding mountains in the city of Alicante. I started walking the territory and getting acquainted with the plants that inhabit the land so that I could manage to design devices related to the functioning of the ecosystems and bring to the light controversial issues defining the natural landscape of Alicante. To do so, I created 5 different devices that were placed in the mountains and remained there for months to interact with the environment and be a part of it.
As a result of this, I gathered information about the devices and how they affected and were affected by plants, birds, rain, wind, passers-by, institutions. insects... All the process and relevant data were registered and presented in drawings, photographs, videos, diagrams and the devices themselves. This way, Un día en el monte suggests the possibility of approaching the territory from a different perspective by reconsidering architectural design as a situated practice for the other-than-human.
